Many people ask about our individual jobs and assignments in the church and what they entail. I’ll start from the oldest to the youngest.
Jake ~ Dad’s job is obviously preaching, teaching, and counseling with people, and that is a whole lot more work than it looks like in written words.
Leanne ~ Mom manages the kitchen, serving coffee and delicious snacks every Sunday. She also makes a light dinner for our Friday night fellowships once a month. She helps one of the Sunday school teachers in class by keeping the kids in line and making the crafts with them. Mom is Dad’s greatest encourager and supporter. She sits in on counseling sessions, works in the nursery, folds tracts, writes any ladies in the church who may be feeling discouraged, and is an excellent example to all those who know her.
Hannah ~ I am the church pianist. I work in the nursery and in the kitchen. I also try to be a blessing and encouragement to those who I know are struggling by writing letters and baking for them. (Banana bread is a favorite with many of our people.) I fold tracts and go street preaching as often as I can.
Lydia ~ Lydia is in charge of preparing the nursery for use. This means sweeping the floor, washing tables, lugging the toy box from the storage closet, and providing juice and crackers for the kids. She also works in the nursery, helps Mom in the kitchen, and folds tracts during the week.
Josiah ~ Josiah is assistant soundman, which means he not only sits behind the controls and looks important (ha, ha!), but he is active in getting the sound equipment ready for the service and cleaning it all up. (So many cords…black spaghetti!) He is also assistant treasurer and uploads each message onto our church’s website. He accompanies Dad street preaching once a week.
To God be the glory for the work we are privileged to do! Serving is a pleasure, and I could never be happy to simply “warm a pew.” Being active for the Lord is when I am most content.
I can’t relate to Christians who feel no need to participate in their church services, whether that means cleaning a bathroom or singing a special. Some Christians don’t feel the need to lift a finger. This is not right! As my pastor says, if you see a job that needs doing, there is nobody better qualified than you to do it! See if it isn’t fun! :)
