One Year Ago...

Yesterday, one year ago...
Russell came to Holland to ask if he could court me with the intent of marriage!

July 14, 2009
It all started with Prince Charming on the far right...
then, 9 months and 3 days later....
Russell & Hannah became the bear bride & groom!
We've almost been married 3 whole months! Wow!

I never thought a year ago that I would be where I am today, or that I would be dealing with the things I am dealing with right now. Despite the devil's fierce opposition, GOD IS GOOD! In the last several weeks there have been times when it seemed like God was so far away. The Psalms have become my prayer when I haven't had the words to express my sorrow. This afternoon I was reminded of Russell's and my verse---the verse we claimed for our relationship:

I had fainted, unless I had believed to see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living.
Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.
Psalms 27:13-14

This is another similar verse God has given me to cling to:

Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope in the LORD.
Psalms 31:24

This temporal world is a cruel place. Life isn't fair. People aren't fair. Circumstances aren't fair. Innocent people suffer while truly evil people get by with their wickedness. It seems so unjust. But there is a Judge in Heaven who judges righteous judgement. The wrongs that have been done will one day be made right, and true justice will prevail. In the past it has always been my parents who have dealt with the brunt of the suffering of the ministry. Now Russell & I are experiencing it first-hand. After 6 weeks of marriage life was just beginning to become scheduled...routine...organized, when our world was turned upside down by the ministry being forcibly shut down, false accusations, arrests, the loss of job and income, and the inability to get a new job because of the charges. One year ago I never would have imagined it... And still, in all the chaos, there has been such an overwhelming peace in my soul. I don't know what the future holds...but I know Who holds the future. This situation came as no surprise to God. "For he performeth the thing that is appointed for me: and many such things are with him." (Job 23:14 ) It is a comfort to know that long before this seeming disaster broke out, the Lord appointed it for us. It wasn't a surprise to Him, though we were surprised by it. He has a plan for us, even in this, and though we walk in present darkness, we believe to see the goodness of the LORD. "When I cry unto thee, then shall mine enemies turn back: this I know; for God is for me." (Psalms 56:9)

A couple weeks ago Russell and I tested something to see if it was God's will. We told the Lord we would know something was His will if He gave us $200, because we didn't have the finances to do it otherwise. Well, the very next day a letter arrived from my grandparents. Enclosed in the envelope was a $100 check for Russell's belated birthday. Even as I was opening the card and saw the $100 I inwardly battled with my flesh, hoping beyond hope that there would be at least another $100, yet not having the faith to believe it could really be possible. After all, why would God bother to look down from the heights of Heaven and hear ME??? I am nothing. I'm a O, written in pencil, and then easily erased. Folded inside the card was a separate letter, and inside I could see there was another check. Could it possibly be another $100???? No! It wasn't a $100 check. It was a $200 check!!! I was blown away...and how foolish that I should be when Russell and I had asked the Lord to give us that exact amount. Not only that, but I realized that the check was in the mail on its way down from New York before we ever asked God for $200.

And it shall come to pass, that before they call, I will answer;
and while they are yet speaking, I will hear.
Isaiah 65:24

Nobody can tell me there isn't a God,
and nobody can say the Bible isn't true.

Well, that whole story really had nothing to do with this post about 1 year ago, but I just couldn't help but brag on the Lord a little. ;) Russell may not have a job at the moment, and our bank account may be running a little low, but I know my God will never desert me. There has never been one day in my life that I did not have enough food to eat. The Lord has given me over and above my needs and has supplied even my wants. I am SO blessed!

It is well with my soul. The blood of Jesus Christ has washed away my sins, and not a person on this earth can take my salvation from me. Yes, they can hurt me physically and emotionally, but spiritually I have a foundation in Christ my LORD which can never be moved. It is well with my soul! Praise God!!!

One Month Anniversary!

The Lord has blessed me beyond anything I could have imagined or deserve. Today I have been married for a month. The time has flown by!!! Next to salvation, marriage is the best thing God ever made possible for humans to enjoy. I am so thankful for my sweet, godly, loving husband. I could not have gotten better! Yesterday evening I went out to dinner with my in-laws and they told me something that thrilled me. They said that since our marriage they have seen me complete Russell. I get the privilege of completing this precious man as his helpmeet. (Genesis 2:18 -- "And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.") I have always believed being a wife, homemaker, and mother is the highest goal and career a woman can have. God put that desire in every woman's heart---whether she chooses to admit it or not. Now I have been married for 1 month, and I can say from personal experience that being a wife and homemaker is the greatest and best!!! I never dreamed it could be so busy, so fun, and so fulfilling. It's a 24/7 job, but the pay is pure love. What more could anyone want? I love cleaning my little house, washing the laundry, and cooking good meals for my hubby. His reaction is worth the hard work and time spent.

I know of girls who would give anything for what I have--a cozy home and a loving husband. For some reason--I'll never know why!--God saw fit to look down from Heaven on this little wisp of a girl and shower His richest blessings down all over me. THANK YOU, LORD, for your blessings on me!!!

Russell surprised me after church on Wednesday and came home with these roses. He is so thoughtful and sweet! Yes, that is one word that describes Russell--thoughtful.

May the bud of our love grow richer and sweeter,
As we walk hand-in-hand behind our Great Leader.
For God's love is what binds our two hearts as one,
In this strength and His power our lives we've begun.

Our one month anniversary!
Praise God! He is good!

Happy Thanksgiving!!!

I hope you all had a Happy Thanksgiving!

Here are a few pics of our Thanksgiving in FL...

Church folks came out to the property, along with some of the Maynards' family. There was a ton of food, and we ate outside. It was the first day that it actually felt like fall. Aaron spent the whole night outside smoking a turkey, and Bro. Buddy fried turkeys. Russell got his favorite cornbread stuffing. You know, I think he tasted that cornbread stuffing last October and decided he'd get a lifetime supply by marrying me! =D

After the meal the staff played football with the boys home. I watched the first part of the game but missed the last part...of course that's when Russell did really good. =( Too bad. I know he loves showing off for me, but I'm already impressed, so it doesn't matter. (chuckle)

Here are the three brothers in action!
We spent the rest of the day packing for our trip back to Holland on Wednesday. It was a nice day, but very different from the Thanksgiving we usually spend with the Kamps who I miss VERY much!

God has been so good to me. This has been the most joyful year of my life. Looking back, I know the Lord has showered many blessings on me, but the one that tops them all is Russell. I got the best when I got him! Thank you, Lord!!!

Preacher Appreciation Day!

I don’t generally pay any attention to the special days on the calendar. However, I was studying my calendar the other day (I wonder why…? =D) when I noticed “Clergy Appreciation Day.” Okay, the word “clergy” sounds Catholic, so I’m changing it to “Preacher Appreciation Day.” It’s sad when we have to make special days to remember people and their important offices. Would to God we were always thankful people and didn’t need to be reminded of these things! So, anyway…I just wanted to write a post and praise the Lord for the great preachers He has put in my life.

As a little girl and teenager, Pastor Bruce Craig was my pastor. I’m thankful for him and all he has meant to our family. I remember a time years ago when my dad was on deputation, leaving us children at home with Mom (her bad health made traveling very difficult). I had a tooth that was loose and simply refusing to fall out, but I was afraid to do anything about it, and Mom was too grossed out to help me pull it. Finally one day my mom brought me into Pastor Craig’s office and asked for help. After having a look and assuring me everything would be fine, he popped it out of my unsuspecting mouth with one smooth motion. Gone! Not only was Pastor Craig good at preaching, but he also made quite an excellent under-cover dentist for a distressed little girl with a stubborn tooth. We never did find it! (chuckle)

Mrs. Craig went to be with the Lord in 2006, which changed a good many things. Though I have childhood memories of her being quite stern when the children were running around or playing behind the pulpit (praise God for that!), Mrs. Craig was such a dear lady. I now look back and understand her much better from an adult perspective. I’m even privileged to have some books she gave me on my bookshelves. I look forward to giving Mrs. Craig a big hug when I get Home! Her testimony has always been a blessing to me, because it is so similar to mine. I believe she never was sure exactly when she got saved, but she told everyone she knew she was because of 1 John 3:14--“We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren.” One thing was sure--Mrs. Craig loved her church! They say that behind every good man is a good woman. In the case of Pastor and Mrs. Craig this was very true! I am so thankful for the influence they have had on my family and in my life.

For the last 14 years, since we left for the mission field, my dad has been my pastor. It has been a blessing to experience Christian pioneering as my parents left everything familiar and comfortable to go to Holland, breaking a fresh trail on hard, rocky soil to reach a barren mission field with the gospel of Jesus Christ. It has been no small feat, and for this my parents have my undying devotion. Have you ever wondered how a path is formed through dense forests or unending prairie lands? A single man or woman makes a hard decision, having two choices--to take the well-trodden path of least resistance or break to new ground destined for better things and greater achievements. Those who have similar courage follow behind these brave souls! This is how great things are accomplished for God! Maybe…one day, the Lord will see fit to give me this great privilege of breaking spiritual ground as well!

I love being a missionary-pastor’s daughter! It has been the greatest blessing in the world to be raised in the home of a preacher, daily saturated in God’s Word. My dad is such an inspiration to me as I see him walking the daily Christian life. We have had people leave our church because they felt Dad was hypocritical (who isn’t???) or they didn’t agree with his Bible stand and instead of approaching him about it, chose to get angry and spread hate. Sure! Dad makes mistakes, because he’s human. But from everything I have witnessed first-hand, my dad is a godly man and the stands he takes aren’t easy. When going against the grain you can expect plenty of splinters! Dad preaches Bible and he preaches hard, but when dealing with people on a one-to-one basis his kind words cannot be resisted by anyone who is walking with God. I know from experience how true this is. My dad is one of the most godly, kind, gracious men I know. I’m proud to call him my daddy and my pastor! I love you, Dad! =)

In about 6 months I’m going to have a new preacher! I’m looking forward to becoming a member of Truth Baptist Church and having Pastor Buddy Maynard as my shepherd. In April 2008 our church got to hear Bro. Buddy preach for the first time, and I’ll never forget what a blessing it was, especially since we don’t get too many special speakers in from the States. It was refreshing to hear someone backing up what Dad has been preaching all along! I love that old-fashioned, squirm-in-your-seat kind of preaching, which is something that many churches have lost with compromise. I haven’t gotten to hear too much of Bro. Buddy’s preaching as of yet, but I know that he has one fine son, who is also a preacher, and that says a lot. I’m so thankful that this missionary-preacher’s daughter is going to be marrying a preacher’s son. Russell is a good preacher…my very own “preacher boy.” (I always thought that was a cute term and wanted to use it to one day describe my best friend in the whole wide world. I always wanted to marry a preacher!)

I would also like to mention that names of Youth Pastor Jim Krohn, for his influence in my life as a teen during visits to the States, and Pastor S. M. Davis, for his detailed preaching on courtship and the strong stand he takes on the Christian home, marriage, and the family. His online sermons have had a tremendous impact on our family. I am also thinking of Pastor & Mrs. Jim Green in Charlevoix, MI. I don’t know Mrs. Green very well personally, but my brief encounters with her have left my heart warmed by the sweet presence of God’s spirit surrounding her. I could continue listing off the names of so many preachers and preachers’ wives who have touched my life. I just want to say how thankful I am to these precious people and the Lord for all His goodness! May they continue to stand strong for the Lord Jesus and not succumb to compromise with this world!

“For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister.” Hebrews 6:10

Dedication Service

Well, the chocolate babies got dedicated to the Lord yesterday! We had a special service at our church for Glenn and Nathalie and their sweet little family. We sure do love these people! The Lord has grown them in so many ways. Please keep praying that our ministry will establish and strengthen good, solid families who can serve the Lord in this country where the family is basically nonexistent. We see boyfriends and girlfriends and their children living together like a family, though the parents aren't married, and we see single moms and single dads with one illegitimate child or multiple children from several different relationships. I know things are bad in the States, but here in Holland it seems to be a plague. What's scary is seeing unmarried couples who are more committed to each other than those who have legally been married. And then there are those who have a baby with a girlfriend/boyfriend, split up, and have difficulty seeing that child as much as they'd like to. It has never made much sense to me, but now that Russell and I are courting, I find it even more mind boggling. For the life of me, I cannot comprehend why anybody would do that...put themselves through that kind of torture, not to mention how confused and insecure the poor children must feel as they are tossed like a ball between two opposing players. God's ways are so much simpler. If only we would follow in them instead of walking our own willful path. So much heartache could be avoided...

We had a full house. I was in the nursery, but I believe Dad preached a message about Abraham offering Isaac. What an excellent topic for such an occasion! Glenn's mother and sister got saved as a result! Praise the Lord! They are only the ones we are aware of. Only God knows who else might have accepted Christ as their Saviour.

Here are Glenn & Nathalie and their 3 boys. They are such a joy to our church and to our family! Some people have the idea that children are a burden, but let me say that when they are brought up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord, my, what a blessing they are! Glenn and Nathalie are doing a good job! We pray they keep up the good work and that God might use these three precious souls and raise them up to be the next generation of godly young men. Perhaps even preachers...you never know!!! =)

Bro. Mischa and Mom made an adorable banner. "Jezus zegt: Laat de kinderen tot Mij komen. (Mat. 19:14)." Mom outdid herself, decorating with bright balloons and colorful flowers and matching napkins. Sister Milly made delicious food for the after-service meal, and other ladies brought dishes as well. Though our family was kept quite busy, it was a blessing to see our people and visitors having such an enjoyable time. I love our church! It's hard to even imagine that I won't always be here. I've never experienced such conflicting and utterly confusing emotions in my entire life. On that subject, I've gotten some teasing from church folk about my ability to cook and take care of babies. Everyone is concerned about my capabilities and determined that I should be well practiced up to be a wife and mother. =)

At a serious moment, Baby Jonathan thought Dad was rather amusing... That baby is too cute!!! I've considered kidnapping him, but I think he might miss his mommy and daddy. Nobody can so easily get a smile or gurgling laugh out of him like his parents and big brothers can. That is something I hope to experience one day.

Daniel was a good boy, though he was sick and feeling somewhat miserable. I actually took care of Daniel for several days when he was a tiny (premature) baby, so I guess I know how a mother feels waking up several times a night for feedings. (grimace) See? I do have some experience! =D

Is it this side of my face you wanted to see?
Nathan is adorable! He isn't super smiley like Daniel is, but, similar to his mommy, when his face lights up in a smile, your heart just about melts.

We love the Kerkeboom family! Lord, bless these dear people!

Praising the Lord!

"The Lord hath done great things for us, whereof we are glad."
Psalms 126:3

Some Christians are sadly prone to look on the dark side of everything, and to dwell more upon what they have gone through than upon what God has done for them. Ask for their impression of the Christian life, and they will describe their continual conflicts, their deep afflictions, their sad adversities, and the sinfulness of their hearts, yet with scarcely any allusion to the mercy and help which God has vouchsafed them. But a Christian whose soul is in a healthy state, will come forward joyously, and say, "I will speak, not about myself, but to the honour of my God. He hath brought me up out of an horrible pit, and out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings: and he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God. The Lord hath done great things for me, whereof I am glad." Such an abstract of experience as this is the very best that any child of God can present. It is true that we endure trials, but it is just as true that we are delivered out of them. It is true that we have our corruptions, and mournfully do we know this, but it is quite as true that we have an all-sufficient Saviour, who overcomes these corruptions, and delivers us from their dominion. In looking back, it would be wrong to deny that we have been in the Slough of Despond, and have crept along the Valley of Humiliation, but it would be equally wicked to forget that we have been through them safely and profitably; we have not remained in them, thanks to our Almighty Helper and Leader, who has brought us "out into a wealthy place." The deeper our troubles, the louder our thanks to God, who has led us through all, and preserved us until now. Our griefs cannot mar the melody of our praise, we reckon them to be the bass part of our life's song, "He hath done great things for us, whereof we are glad."

Sacrifice

Several months ago I started doing a study on sacrifice, but I lost my notes, so I’m going to have to start over again. Bare with me here as I plunge into some thoughts and interesting Scripture verses on the subject…

Sacrifice for a Selfish Deed

The subject of sacrifice, as opposed to selfishness, is very interesting when you consider that selfishness was the cause or the reason that we find ourselves living in a disaster-filled world today, and a sacrifice was needed to rectify the wrong of that first selfish deed.

If we go back to the very beginning of the world--that would be the book of Genesis--we see that God created two perfectly sinless people named Adam and Eve. They lived in the Garden of Eden and were told they could eat of any tree they wished to…all except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Satan, in the form of a snake, tempted Eve. This is a conversation that transpired between the two…

Serpent: “Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?”
Eve: “We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.”
Serpent: “Ye shall not surely die: For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.”

Satan promised that with the fruit of the forbidden tree came the supernatural knowledge of godhood. Selfishness, or self-interest, triggered Eve to reach out and take the fruit, because she wanted to be better than God had made her and better than God Himself.

THE RESULTS: And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat. And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.
Genesis 3:1-7

Selfishness was the first sin of disobedience to God, and today we still see that selfishness is a predominant curse which has destroyed and continues to destroy the human race.
The deed was done, and now a sacrifice was required.

“Wherefore, as by one man [Adam] sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.” Romans 5:12

Sacrifice of a Lamb

The first sacrificial deed ever recorded in human history is found in Genesis 3:21, when God killed an innocent animal to clothe Adam and Eve who realized their naked, and now sinful selves.

The first sacrifice for sin made by man is recorded in the Genesis 4, when Abel killed a lamb, thereby making temporary atonement, or payment, for his sins. From Genesis all the way to the books of the Gospels we see that the continual sacrificing of an animal was made to hold off God’s wrath towards sinful mankind. The blood of an animal was substituted for the life’s blood of a human who deserved to die.

In Exodus 12 we read that the captive Israelites were to kill a lamb and swipe the blood on the doorposts of their houses so that the firstborn would be spared when the death angel passed through the streets of Egypt.

“For I will pass through the land of Egypt this night, and will smite all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the LORD. And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt.”
Exodus 12:12-13

Blood was the only payment that would suppress God’s fury towards disobedient man. Hebrew 9:22 says, “And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.”

There’s a trail of blood leading from the first act of sin, and it continues on and on throughout the pages of the Bible. God, in His holiness, knew that the sin offering of an animal was only a temporary reconciliation, a band aide, if you will, for the real problem. The only payment that could permanently cancel God’s terrible judgment on mankind was the blood offering of a sinless person. But WHO? Who could save a people lost in sin?

Sacrifice of The Lamb

God Almighty sat on His great throne. His voice, like the sounds of many waters, thundered out, “Who will go and redeem My people?” The soft whispering of thousands of angels echoed like the soft rustling of reeds throughout the courts of Heaven. Who? Who would go? Suddenly One arrayed in garments as bright as the sun stepped forward. A hush fell. “I will go, Father. I will buy them back.” It was the voice of the perfect, spotless Son of God.

And God so loved the world full of lost sinners that He sent His only Son, Jesus Christ, to be born of a young virgin, to live a sinless life, and finally to offer Himself as the perfect Lamb.

The sky was black as pitch. The ground trembled underfoot, and a terrible rumbling filled the heavens. The stifling air seemed almost about to crack with an unexplainable tension.
People stood all around, silent, as though expectant of something unknown. Earlier there had been much noise and commotion. The angry shouts of soldiers. The echoing ring of a hammer striking a nail. A long scream. A thud. Then groanings of agony.
Thunder rumbled in the distance. The occasional flash of lightening bathed the scene before me in an eerie glow. Through the dim light I discerned the form of three crosses on a hilltop. To the left and right hung two thieves to die as they deserved, but…there was something about that middle cross that drew my somber gaze. The sight I saw was one of indescribable suffering.
A body stretched on rough wood, nailed at the wrist and the feet. Blood flowed in torrents from that cross. Pooling at its foot, it ran in small streams off the side of the hill.
And as my eyes gazed upward, past a body so bruised and beaten and bloody, I saw the face of a man, almost unrecognizable. It was the face of One who had endured torture and mocking.
On His head was a crown of long, sharp thorns planted firmly into the scalp. I took in this scene of excruciating agony…and words failed me.
Suppressed emotions almost choked me and I felt hot tears welling in my eyes. I had almost turned away, but then my eyes met His gaze, so stead and sure. His eyes… I never saw such eyes. Such innocent eyes. Such love radiating, as though from a supernatural source. What I read there was not anger or rage or hate, but…forgiveness. He seemed to look right through me…as though He was seeing into my very soul.
I lowered my head, feeling shame and guilt because I knew what secrets I guarded inside, and still I felt the warmth of His love washing over me. I backed away in confusion and cowered in the shadows.
All was still and calm. Then came a soft voice, breaking the quietness. “Father! Forgive them, for they know not what they do!” I could hardly believe my ears, but I saw His lips utter those astounding words. The soldiers and others close enough to hear whispered among themselves. Who was this man that forgave those who had so cruelly abused Him without a cause?
It grew darker still and the low rumbling noise increased. The air seemed charged with a strange, unidentifiable energy. It was as though the whole universe stood still as if transfixed, time had stopped, and the eyes of nature were focused on this scene as though it was the axis on which all history--past, present, and future--turned. Tension mounted. Then a powerful cry wrenched the air. “IT IS FINISHED!”
The earth shook violently. Suddenly the sky exploded with crashing thunder and lightening licked the ground as quick flashes of blinding white light pierced the blackness--like a snake furiously lashing out its tongue at its victim. The heavens above opened up and angrily unleashed pounding rain and hail.
I fell to the ground as though struck, and as I did so, my hand splashed in sticky liquid. Blood. His blood. Trembling, I gazed up at the now limp form stretched on the cross. It was as though an unseen battle had been waging all that time as He hung there dying…and now, with His last breath, it was won!
Surely, this was the Son of God who had taken the sins of the world in His body and bled and died that we might live. Jesus Christ, the Lamb, had offered Himself as the perfect sacrifice.

“For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins. Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me: In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure. Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God. Above when he said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings and offering for sin thou wouldest not, neither hadst pleasure therein; which are offered by the law; Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first [lamb offering], that he may establish the second [Jesus’ offering on the cross]. By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.”
Hebrews 10:4-10

Spiritual Sacrifices

The need for animal sacrifice was done away with when Christ completed His work on Calvary. The blood of Jesus washes away our sins. Praise God!!! Still, the Lord asks sacrifices of us, His blood-bought children.

We talk quite freely about sacrifice, but do we really know what we mean when we say “sacrifice?” I didn’t realize until recently how many verses there are that mention specific sacrifices that we, as Christians, are to make.

“Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.” 1 Peter 2:5

Each one who has received Jesus Christ as their personal Saviour is like a building stone, a brick, and together we make a spiritual house, a church, and it is there that we offer sacrifice--not bulls and lambs, but spiritual sacrifices.

The following points were such a blessing to me! Let’s take a look at some of these spiritual sacrifices…

~ Body
“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.” Romans 12:1

How do we present our bodies as a living sacrifice? As Christians it is our obligation to look, dress, smell, talk, act, and live like the blood-bought children of the highest King of kings and Lord of lords! This is certainly a sacrifice; it’s not always easy! But Paul says it’s your “reasonable service.” Translated, that means this: it’s really not too much to ask. It’s reasonable!

As ladies it is our responsibility to dress in a manner that is pleasing to the Lord and helps our brothers in Christ grow closer to Him; that means we don’t cause them to lust! Guys have the responsibility to be clean-shaved and have a short haircut and also to dress in a neat way that glorifies God’s name.

Not only are we supposed to be outwardly presentable, but we should act and live in a way that is holy and acceptable to God. People around us are studying us. What do they see? Are we blameless? The Bible refers to our lives as letters known and read of all men. Do people look at you and detect a noticeable difference? It’s only reasonable that you look different from this world since you’ve been born into the kingdom of God.

~ Righteousness & Trust
“Stand in awe, and sin not…Offer the sacrifices of righteousness, and put your trust in the LORD.” Psalm 4:4-5

It’s a sacrifice to live righteously. The world doesn’t like somebody who tries to be different--a person who goes against the grain. You can be guaranteed that if you are living right, Satan is going to throw everything he’s got your way. Be prepared! It’s not easy, but it is the only path that leads to lasting reward.

“Put your trust in the Lord.” Trusting the Lord is a sacrifice for sure. There are times in my life when I’ve looking to heaven and cried, “What are You doing?! I don’t understand!!!” The Christian life is a pathway that sometimes requires blind faith. I have to trust that God is working all things together for good because I love Him (Romans 8:28).

~ Love
“Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children; And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.” Ephesians 5:2

If you have a family and live with them 24 hours a day, then you already know it’s a sacrifice to walk in love and keep walking in love. Brothers and sisters can test one’s patience to the limit. We have a saying in our house. “Smile and nod.” Sometimes it’s best to just shut up. A soft answer (or no answer at all) turneth away wrath.

Then there are other times when you meet up with brothers and sisters in the Lord who you love but don’t really get along with well; sometimes people’s personalities tend to clash. Remember what Proverbs 10:12 says, “Hatred stirreth up strifes: but love covereth all sins.” The best way to learn to love somebody is to pray for them. “Lord, help me to love ______ with Your love, because mine isn’t sufficient of itself.”

~ Communication
“But to do good and to communicate forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.” Hebrews 13:16

Communication is essential for everyday living. Those who don’t communicate properly often have a difficult time in life. Often busy schedules can cause it to be even more difficult to communicate effectively, as people are racing about in life. Communication is a sacrifice. I know I often have a hard time putting my feelings into words and letting those I love get a glimpse into my heart.

Paul says, “To do good…” In other words, it’s a good thing to communicate! There are so many ways of communication, especially these days when we not only have snail mail, but email and instant messaging and unlimited phone service. Anybody can reach anyone just about anywhere at any time.
Being a missionary’s daughter, I often think how blessed we are to be able to contact those we love in just a matter of minutes, across the great expanse of an ocean. God is so good! Sometimes, though, I think that as the means of communication has progressed unbelievably, people communicate less. Life gets busy, and sometimes we become so preoccupied with our lives that we forget about others. We forget about lonely missionaries on foreign fields, and even those closer to home, like the older folks in our churches.
Those of us who are young often tend to be selfish. (Yes, it’s that very first sin from our father Adam rearing its ugly head once again.) Our whole life lies before us, and we have so many grand plans we wish to carry out. We forget that we aren’t the only ones who have physical, and even more important, emotional needs.
We would do well to STOP for just a few minutes and ask the Lord how we can reach out to others. We need to let Christ have some say in our lives for a change! How can we communicate better? Maybe take some time and sit down and write a missionary or somebody who is going through a struggle, or bring some fresh baking to an older person in your church. It’s a sacrifice of your time and your energy, but you might be surprised how happy you could make a soul that is so very precious to the Lord. And in the meantime you’ll make yourself glad as well, because you’ve made a spiritual sacrifice to God!

What do you think is the most important message we can communicate to those around us? The Gospel! Soul winning isn’t an easy thing, at least, it isn’t easy for me. I think even the most outgoing person on this earth has a hard time speaking with people about the fact that they are sinners and their sin is going to send them to Hell. There’s that element of pride inside that screams, “You look like an idiot! You shouldn’t be offending these people! What will they think of you?” And then there is that nagging fear of, “What if I say something wrong? What if I don’t have the right answer?” Soul winning isn’t an easy task, yet the Lord says we are not to forget to communicate in this way and that He is well pleased with this sacrifice.

“How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!” Romans 10:14-15

“The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise.” Proverbs 11:30

~ Thanksgiving & Praise
“And let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving, and declare his works with rejoicing.” Psalm 107:22
“I will freely sacrifice unto thee: I will praise thy name, O LORD; for it is good.” Psalm 54:6
“I will offer to thee the sacrifice of thanksgiving, and will call upon the name of the LORD.” Psalm 116:17
“By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name.” Hebrews 13:15
“But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving.” Jonah 2:9

Sometimes we find ourselves surrounded by trying situations we never believed could exist…and certainly not in our lives. Marital problems, financial problems, relationship problems, health issues…the list goes on and on. It’s hard not to become depressed under such a load of cares. This is when giving thanks and praise to God becomes a sacrifice. It’s so easy to be glad when life is going fine, but the true test of sacrificial thanksgiving and praise is when we’re surrounded by trouble and there seems to be no way out. We have a choice--curse God or bless Him.

As Job lay covered in sores, all his children dead, and earthly possessions stolen or destroyed, his wife’s advice was, “Curse God and die.” (Nice lady!) Job’s response was this: “Thou speakest as one of the foolish women speaketh. What? shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil?” And the Bible continues on to say “In all this did not Job sin with his lips.” Job refused to put the blame for his trials on God and yield to the pressure of his wife and “friends.” Instead, Job offered a sacrifice of praise most precious to God. “And [Job] said, ‘Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.’”

~ Joy
“And now shall mine head be lifted up above mine enemies round about me: therefore will I offer in his tabernacle sacrifices of joy; I will sing, yea, I will sing praises unto the LORD.” Psalm 27:6

Joy is the fruit of the sacrificial gifts of thanksgiving and praise. When God sees a heart willing to trust and praise Him even in tribulation, He gives a wellspring of joy, and we make a sacrifice when we pour that joy out before Him in the midst of trials. Often we face what are called every-day irritations. Sometimes it’s not so much the big problems that cause frustration as the many small ones.

Everything you touch falls to the ground and smashes to smithereens. The kids spill milk and food all over the kitchen or track mud onto the freshly scrubbed floors. You feel sick, and nobody understands how ill you are. You can’t stand your job. You are ridiculed at school because you are a Christian. You feel like too much is expected from you, and you can’t do anything right. Life seems to be pressing in on every side. Everything adds up until there is an explosion of anger or tears.

At these times it truly is a sacrifice to be joyful. It’s a sacrifice to say, “Praise the Lord anyway!” and trust that better days are ahead. David said, “Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.” (Psalm 16:11) When we find ourselves in a crisis, we need to stop and find a quiet place and get in God’s presence. It is there that we will discover the refreshing our souls desire and the fortitude to go on. And then in the middle of what feels like chaos we offer the sweet sacrifices of joy to the Lord.

~ Prayer
“LORD, I cry unto thee: make haste unto me; give ear unto my voice, when I cry unto thee. Let my prayer be set forth before thee as incense; and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.” Psalm 141:2

David compared his prayer, the deepest longings of his heart, as a sacrifice to God. Prayer is one of the hardest things I do. When it comes time to pray all at once I can think of several unpleasant jobs that suddenly look very appealing. And when it’s not that problem, then it’s the distractions that never fail to come up. I have to force myself to bow the knee before God.

Why is prayer so difficult? Well, for one thing, my wicked, prideful flesh doesn’t like to humble itself in prayer. When I pray I’m admitting that I have no strength or wisdom of my own. I am throwing myself on God’s mercy, acknowledging that I need divine help and guidance in my life. Prayer is a battle, in that I am turning my back on all that my eyes can see and my hands can touch, and I am reaching out in faith for that which cannot be felt or seen. I’m exiting the temporal world and entering the spiritual realm of the eternal. This is when I come in contact with God and my spirit is refreshed. For this reason the devil hates a praying Christian, so pray, Christian!!! Offer the sacrifice of prayer to God! It is a worthy endeavor indeed!

~ Broken Spirit & Contrite Heart
“The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.” Psalm 51:17

That which is viewed by this world as despicable is beautiful to the Lord. He loves a spirit of submission and contrition. Is it any surprise that this, also, is seen as a sacrifice to God? In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus blessed those whom the world would reject. The poor in spirit, those that mourned, the meek, those that hunger and thirst after righteousness, the merciful, the pure in heart, the peacemakers, the persecuted.

God willingly accepts those who come to Him in humility, realizing their need, but He turns His back to the proud. “Though the LORD be high, yet hath he respect unto the lowly: but the proud he knoweth afar off.” (Psalm 138:6) How do we captivate God’s attention? By eliminating every despicable speck of selfish pride. By coming to Him with a heart broken by the realization of sin and a spirit of repentance. One of the greatest displays of sacrifice is prayer and fasting. Truly getting a hold of God!!! Jesus said, “This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting.” (Mark 9:29) Some things just won’t change unless we show God that we are serious.

Has there ever been a time in your life when you were extremely upset about something--perhaps a friend or loved one who was backslidden or lost--when you wanted something so desperately that you were willing to do anything, to give up anything, in order to see God work? Sometimes the sorrow is so overwhelming that words just won’t come…they aren’t enough. Then “the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.” (Romans 8:26-27)

Have you spent time crying out to God, sobbing for the deepest burdens of your heart? Have you shown Him the results of a broken spirit? God hears the cry of the righteous. As a father, when he hears his child crying, the Father in Heaven looks down and sees and hears and comforts and mends the broken hearts of His children. It is a sacrifice well pleasing to God when we care so much about others that we become broken for them.

Then there are some things that won’t change until we get right! I wonder how often we have stood in God’s way. How many times has our pride, our selfishness, our own great plans, hindered a marvelous work He was willing to do? Christian, don’t stand in God’s way; that is a dangerous place to be! We need to be so very careful that sin does not rob us of the blessings God desires to pour out upon us.

“If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:14

~ Giving
“Not because I desire a gift: but I desire fruit that may abound to your account. But I have all, and abound: I am full, having received of Epaphroditus the things which were sent from you, an odour of a sweet smell, a sacrifice acceptable, wellpleasing to God. But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:17-19

In this verse Paul is speaking to the Philippians about their gifts to him, which he said were a sacrifice acceptable and well pleasing to God. The Bible speaks many times about tithing. It is every Christian’s responsibility to give 10% of his or her income to the Lord. This is to support the pastor, the church, and missionaries. Paul was a missionary, and he needed financial support to continue the ministry he had received of the Lord. He accepted the gifts from the Philippians as their sacrifice to God.

God does not call every Christian into fulltime ministry and service on the mission field. Few are called, but those left behind to stay “with the stuff” have their own responsibilities. God gives those members in the church a part in missionary work by supporting the workers on foreign fields financially and with prayer. So, you see, as long as we are sacrificing as we ought to be, we are all missionaries, whether we go to the mission field or stay on the home front and supply the needs of foreign laborers.

Not only should we be giving our money to the Lord, but our time and effort as well. God desires our bodies as living sacrifices. How can we become a living sacrifice? By giving ourselves! “And this they did, not as we hoped, but first gave their own selves to the Lord, and unto us by the will of God.” (2 Corinthians 8:5) Recently I heard the story of a young couple who goes to the alter to surrender to the mission field every time they have a missions conference at their church. They make themselves available to God…and that is all He asks. God sees our willingness to serve as though we had already done it! (Romans 4:17) When we give God our best, He promises to supply all our needs. Our need determines God’s supply!

“Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.” Luke 6:38

Better Than Sacrifice

“And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.” 1 Samuel 15:22

With all these sacrifices mentioned above, we haven’t mentioned the ultimate spiritual sacrifice that God requires of His children. The greatest offering we can ever give God is the sacrifice of absolute obedience. Better than anything else we could offer Him is a will totally surrendered to the Lord.

King Saul thought he could please God by sacrificing cattle when his orders were to destroy everything that belonged to the Amalekites. Instead of obeying, Saul took matters into his own hands and offered up sacrifices in carnality. Saul had a fake sense of holiness. He did what appeared to be right, but he was really in rebellion to God’s will. The price he paid was high--his removal from the throne and eventually his life.

“Rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry.”

Beware of false holiness! Deeds not done from the heart do not count. We cannot offer one spiritual sacrifice and think we escape the others that we do not like. God must be obeyed all the way. Once we have abandoned our will to Him, all the sacrifices above will come naturally as the Spirit of God works in our lives. The first step to spiritual victory is this--obedience.

“Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.” 1 Peter 2:5

Baby Bunnies and Brown-Paper Packages

This title reminds me of the song “My Favorite Things” from “The Sound of Music.” The Lord has been blessing us like crazy lately!

Yesterday evening we drove into Hilversum (where my dad was raised) to look at baby bunnies. They were SO cute! The first one that was given to me to hold was a buttery-brown color. At first he just sat there and let me stoke his soft fur. Then he began flopping around and started licking me and then biting me--a tickly feeling. =) At first I thought I might have food on my hand, although I couldn’t imagine how, and that was why he kept biting me. The little guy kept turning and turning as if he was looking for something. The lady said the babies needed to nurse; that made sense.

Then Lydia and I traded bunnies. That little guy kept turning in my hand as well, and then he began walking up my arm. I had to keep moving my hands in front of him so he wouldn’t run out of walking space and end up on the ground. Apparently he wasn’t too concerned about that. =)

The baby bunnies fit in the palm of my hand. They must have been about 3 or 3½ inches long and weighed practically nothing. They looked like furry mice. SO cute! I love them!
Pumpkin Pie and Peanut Butter--those are the names Lydia chose for them. I hope we picked a male and a female (apparently you can’t tell what gender they are at such a young age--only 2 weeks old), because Lydia wants to start a bunny business. We live right next to a school, so it shouldn’t be too hard to sell the babies. I just can’t wait until we can bring Pumpkin and Peanut home in 4 weeks, when they are weaned.

See more photos Here.

This morning 4 big brown packages arrived from the States. The Maynards in Florida sent us a whole bunch of treats--turkey pepperoni, Triscuits, Sugar Creek Gang books, pretty material for making dresses/skirts, and many other nice things. That was so fun and exciting! God sure has blessed us with loving and extremely generous friends! God is very good to us! =)

This and That

Boy, I’ve really been slacking off here! I keep thinking of some ordinary, everyday things I could write about, but then I always end up deciding they are too insignificant to share. Probably dumb, but…

Okay, let me just go on a little rabbit trail and share some stuff with you. Yesterday Dad preached a message called “Humility’s Abilities.” It was a good message. Dad preached about some things I’ve been thinking on lately. He talked about not getting discouraged when we fail. It seems I’ve been doing a lot of that lately... Failing the Lord. Messing up. Walking in my own strength instead of relying upon the Lord for His. When I fall, I shouldn’t sit there crying about it. I need to get up and try again. God doesn’t like quitters.

My mind was going 100 mph as Dad spoke. I remembered the verse in Proverbs that I read recently: “Most men will proclaim every one his own goodness: but a faithful man who can find?” That stuck out in my mind. In other words, every person will boast about his great abilities, but who can find a person faithfully carrying out his duties, no matter how great or small, significant or insignificant?

I’ve been discouraged lately. I feel like I’m not really doing anything of importance. Every day it’s the same old story. I’m not doing anything great… What is my true purpose in life? Dad was preaching that we should fulfill our duties, no matter how small they may seem. Then it dawned on me…just be faithful! Just be faithful! To God it doesn’t matter how great my task may be; all He asks is faithfulness. I felt a renewed energy sweep over me as I decided right then that I will be faithful! I gleaned a lot of stuff from that message. Great stuff! =)

Well, that was the rabbit trail. Now for the exciting things I want to tell you about!

On Sunday, during prayer request time, Shelby, a girl in our church, asked for prayer for her friend Pauline. Shelby has spoken to me briefly in the past about this girl in her class who seemed to be searching for the Lord. After the church service, Dad made arrangements to go see Pauline on Tuesday. I wasn’t feeling well yesterday, and Mom had things she needed to do, so Lydia accompanied Dad. They picked Shelby up, and then headed to Pauline’s home.

To make a long story short, Pauline got saved! Dad said it was beautiful to see her so open. Dad hadn’t even finished telling her his testimony and she was already crying. I’ve been praying throughout this day that God will make a way that Pauline won’t have to work on Sundays and Wednesdays so she can come to church. It bothers me that so many people get saved and then never do anything about it. They seem to sink right back into the miry pit of the world from which they were rescued. I don’t want Pauline to be one of those people. Would you pray with me for Pauline’s spiritual growth? I’d really appreciate that! =)

God is SO Good!

I have a wonderful story to tell. It happened just a few days ago, on Monday, April 28th.

Mom and I went grocery shopping after lunch. When we were finished, we went to the craft store to pick something up. We were about to pay at the cash register, when Mom suddenly realized her wallet wasn’t in her purse.

Fear gripped my heart, and Mom was upset. Suddenly I knew…it was those two punks behind us in the grocery store. They took the wallet while Mom was off getting whipping cream, Dad was loading the groceries onto the conveyor belt, and I was hurriedly packing the groceries in bags. The store was a madhouse.

My mind was in a scramble as the two of us walked down to the parking garage to find Dad and then back up again. He was waiting in the car near the store. Mom told Dad that her wallet was missing, and then we quickly drove back to the grocery store. Mom and Dad went in to inquire if any wallets had been found, but I stayed in the car. “Dear Lord, this can’t be happening,” I prayed, “please intervene.”

I kept praying until Mom and Dad returned. Nothing. We drove home, Dad almost speeding. He immediately called to block the credit cards as soon as we got into the house. Mom cried, and I hugged her. What a mess! Obviously the devil was trying to get us angry, distracted, and upset because of the conference this week. He isn't happy that we are working against him.

Soon Dad came downstairs saying the wallet had been found in a store, and somebody had already blocked the credit cards, astoundingly! Dad immediately drove off to reclaim the wallet, and a short time later he came back with it.

The wallet had been tucked inside a purse at a store downtown. A woman intending to buy the purse found Mom’s wallet inside it and handed it in at the desk. The owner of the store immediately blocked the credit cards.

Isn’t that amazing?! Those punks obviously just wanted the cash, so they tossed the wallet away with everything else in it. There was only 5 Euro (under $10) in the wallet.

It could have been weeks before it was found. The person buying the purse might not have been an honest person. The store owner might not have been an honest person. So many things could have happened, and yet, we got Mom’s wallet back less than an hour after we realized it was missing. God is so good! He was looking out for us. I serve a great God! =)
I am reminded of that verse, "If God be for us, who can be against us?" Praise the Lord!

My New Camera

What a lovely day! It’s about 70 degrees outside and somewhat humid. This is the first day that it’s felt like spring…no, summer! =) Summer! How I love summer! (squeal of delight) Not only is the weather beautiful, but the Lord did something so sweet for me today.

I’ve been praying for a camera for several weeks now. I really wanted one before we have our street preaching conference which is next week. Well, this morning Dad came to me and said he had found a camera for me. We drove into Bussum together, and Dad bought it for me!!! I was planning to buy it with my own money, but Dad wouldn’t let me. He got all offended when I tried to argue with him about it. My daddy is so sweet! I got a Pentax Optio E40 on sale for a great price. I’m still trying to get used to it, but I like it already. The camera makes movies with sound, and I can also make audio recordings, which is a pretty neat feature! What a sweet blessing from the Lord! He’s so good to me. He supplies my needs and so many of my wants. Praise the Lord! =) Here’s a picture of my new camera…

My Sweet Comfort, His Endless Strength

I’m so thankful that I know how to play the piano. I pity those who have never learned to play an instrument; they have missed out on one of life’s greatest pleasures.

When I play the piano, it is my thinking time. As my fingers produce the music I see on the page before me, my mind unleashes a flood of thoughts. If they could be measured in notes, I would say I do about 20 thoughts a note. :) My practice time is my private time to reflect on the day’s events, but mostly to ponder the things that deeply bother me. Many times I find that my emotional energy ~sadness, hurt, and sometimes anger~ is poured out onto those piano keys. The music I play matches my mood. It is a healthy way to release the emotions that sometimes build up to be more than I can bear.

Sometimes, like yesterday, my sorrowful thoughts and the comforting words of the song I sang cause the tears to flow. Music is the key that sometimes unlocks the door to hidden emotions, hidden hurts, things I didn’t even realize were there.

Tears are such a sweet release from pain; I’m so thankful God made them. Tears are the moisture that give root to the seed of bitterness. When I cry out all the hurt I’m feeling, the root of bitterness withers and dies. When, in anger and self pity, I hold back my tears, bitterness is given a chance to take root in the tenderized “soil” of my soul. These roots are not like the roots of a weed, which are easily pulled out of the ground. The roots of bitterness grow deep down and take firm hold on their victim. So, as I can see it, tears are a wonderful blessing. They bring sweet relief to an aching heart. After having a good hard cry, I pray, and then my world feels a great deal more stable and safe.

It is said in 1 Samuel 30:6 that David encouraged himself in the Lord. When I feel discouraged and ready to give up, I sometimes find myself doing the same thing.

“I will trust the Lord!”

“I will serve God!”

In a weakened state, somehow verbalizing these words with an unshakable determination that I don’t even feel at the moment gives me the strength to do them. Perhaps it is an act of faith. Sometimes I just have to command myself. And then the encouragement comes. Suddenly I find that I have the endurance to face the test that lies before me. The Lord has heard my declaration to do right, and He honors it with His power.

Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him. But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul.
Hebrew 10:38, 39

Truly, God is good! God never fails! I will trust Him, and I will serve Him! Will you?

Happy Easter!

It's not about counterfeit eggs and bunnies; it's about something far greater...

Jesus Christ is risen!

"And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified. He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay." Matthew 28:5, 6

THE GRAVE COULD NOT CONTAIN HIM!

JESUS is LORD!
