In the valley there is war
With the battle raging sore
Bravely on the people fight
While they still have little light
Moses’ hands are heavy now
But they must stay up somehow
Else the battle will be lost
And they pay an awful cost
So God used them--Aaron and Hur
Steady hands held strong and sure
Faithful men stood by his side
Stayed until the evening tide
Yes, the rod of God stood tall
And the people did not fall
Vict’ry came the battle won
As they saw the sinking sun
Chorus:
Stand by the man of God today,
Hold up his hands and plan to stay
You are needed in the fight
As he stands for truth and right
Stand by the man of God today,
Hold up his hands and work and pray
Vict’ry surely will be won
Yes, before the sinking sun
Stand by God’s man
Now across this sin-sick land
There are men who take a stand
But the war is fierce for some
Tired and weak they have become
Men are falling left and right
In the fading, flick’ring light
Men of God, oh, do not fail
For God’s Word will still prevail
Faithful men around you stand
Lifting up your heavy hands
They will love and work and pray
Till the battle’s end they’ll stay
So lift up the Word of God
For we all must see that rod
Soon the battle will be o’er
We will surely win the war
Chorus:
Stand by the man of God today,
Hold up his hands and plan to stay
You are needed in the fight
As he stands for truth and right
Stand by the man of God today,
Hold up his hands and work and pray
Vict’ry surely will be won
Yes, before the sinking sun
Stand by God’s man

“Then came Amalek, and fought with Israel in Rephidim.
And Moses said unto Joshua, Choose us out men, and go out, fight with Amalek: tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in mine hand.
So Joshua did as Moses had said to him, and fought with Amalek: and Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.
And it came to pass, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed: and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed.
But Moses’ hands were heavy; and they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat thereon; and Aaron and Hur stayed up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.”
Exodus 17:8-12
I would like to take a moment to thank all the courageous “Aarons” and the “Hurs” who have faithfully upheld the hands of their pastors, sticking by them through the goods times and the bad. I’m so, so, so very tired of watching good men allow themselves to be dragged down by the devil and pride and lust. Sin, like a venomous snake, saps their strength, making them weak and fainthearted in the day of battle. It is a slow, but sure death.
These Weak-hearts leave the church and their positions of authority in the ministry, thereby giving unbelievers and all who know them the chance to scoff at the once victorious Christian. They crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.
Some leave unbelievable chaos behind as they shut the church doors. Others stab their faithful friend, the pastor, in the back and leave a gaping void in the area of service they once filled. Then there are the discouraged partners in the ministry and the many church folks who are so deeply affected. All this, and we haven’t even mentioned how it hurts God. Not only is it ultimately selfish; it’s just plain wicked.
Those verses above continue on…
“And the LORD said unto Moses, Write this for a memorial in a book, and rehearse it in the ears of Joshua: for I will utterly put out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven.
And Moses built an altar, and called the name of it Jehovahnissi:
For he said, Because the LORD hath sworn that the LORD will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.”
Exodus 17:13-16
Amalek is a picture of our human flesh. When I read this verse I realized that God’s Word has proven true once again. When God saved us from Hell He saved our souls, but we are still stuck with this body of corruption. Generation to generation the Spirit of God inside us has been fighting against our wicked human nature. The foolish succumb to the flesh; those who are wise work along with the Spirit!
I’ve often wondered what causes people to fall for the devil’s tricks and be led astray. First, I think it has to do with how much room we give the devil. Second, the answer is found in one of the stanzas of the song above. “Stand by the man of God today; hold up his hands and plan to stay.” Christian, have you made plans do stay??? That’s what it all boils down to--the will. You and I have a choice to make. Will we do right, or will we do wrong?
I’ve seen too many Christians quit on God. Sometimes it’s enough to crush my spirit. Seeing people fall away one after another could do one of two things: discourage me beyond hope or strengthen me in the fight to do right. I’ve made a personal decision, and my mind is made up! Everyone else can walk out and be a quitting loser, but I am NOT! I have made plans to STAY!
“And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” Joshua 24:15
What choice have YOU made?
