I wrote this post on March 20th of last year (2008), but I thought it was very fitting for Father’s Day, and what I wrote then is still pertinent to today.

“But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.”
1 Corinthians 11:3
Jesus Christ is the center of our home, our “Head,” and the glorious light of His presence is not contained by walls of brick, mortar, and cement, for it radiates far beyond physical boundaries. Our neighbors know Who sits on the throne and the God we worship ~ it’s not the TV or the sun. The living room is the central room of our home; it’s where we all gather every day for family devotions, etc. In the center of our living area is the coffee table, and under it is our big family Bible. God’s Word is the center of our home, both literally and figuratively speaking. I was pondering that the other day and thought it was neat.
Our house stands as an embassy of peace in a city of turmoil and confusion. Yes, storms may come, but we have a sure foundation on Christ, the solid Rock. He is our Refuge. He is our protector. Angels guard this house by night and drive away all that would seek to harm.
“The angel of the LORD encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them.”
Psalm 34:7
Daddy is the head of our home. We look to him as our leader and our defender. While Mom and the children each peek out of a window, Daddy stands in the doorway, warding off evil and allowing only the good to enter in. Daddy is the strongman of the house (Matthew 12:29, Mark 3:27, Luke 11:21).
We look up to Daddy as our spiritual leader, the one who shows us the ways of God. When I don’t understand something in the Bible I go to Daddy. He explains it to me, and suddenly it all makes sense. Sometimes when I feel that my prayers aren’t getting past the ceiling, I go to Daddy, and he prays for me. Daddy can always get through to God. God answers Daddy’s prayers.
When the storms of life rage, we look to Daddy as he looks to his God. When everything seems against us and we cry out in discouragement, Daddy encourages us with the words of the Lord. When we feel sad and depressed, Daddy always has a good word and reminds us of the things we should be thankful for.
I have been going through a somewhat turbulent time lately. The other day I sat on Mom’s bed crying tears of physical and spiritual exhaustion. Mom left to get Kleenex and Dad. He came upstairs and prayed for me, commanding Satan in the name of Jesus to leave me alone. I felt much better after that, as though an unseen burden had been lifted from off my shoulders.
When Daddy is home, everyone is happy and feels safe. Mom has often told me that as children we would play contentedly as she worked around the house. Mommy was always there, always ready to comfort, correct, and then wipe a tear. I guess we took her constant presence for granted. However, when Daddy came home from a long day at work, we all ran to the door, excitedly shouting, “Daddy’s home! Daddy’s home!” It was the most joyful part of the day. I can picture it in my mind. We would crowd around Daddy as he unbuttoned his jacket, eagerly telling him about the day’s events and waiting for him to toss us in the air and kiss our flushed cheeks. Mommy, standing in the kitchen doorway, would absentmindedly be wiping her hands on the dish towel, smiling as she gazed at her happy little brood…waiting for her turn.
I woke up very early this morning. As I quietly lay, hoping sleep would come again, I found myself praying for Daddy. The devil wants to take him down. The devil wants to destroy all the daddies in the world who carefully guard their homes against him. Satan is the home wrecker. He will stop at nothing to tear a family apart. Moms and children, pray for your husbands, for your daddies. If the enemy wounds him, he will enter into the home and destroy you as well. Pray for your head!
The world would be a better place if every boy and girl had a Daddy like mine. When I get married someday, it’s going to be to a man like my daddy. He will stand in the doorway and protect me and our children from evil. He will be my head and the spiritual leader of our home. I will be in submission to him as he follows the Lord’s direction. He will have my love, respect, and devotion all the days of my life.
Thank you, Daddy, for all that you are to your family. I love you!
